Last year, I convinced a colleague at our school to try woodworking with her class. To her amazement, her students were respectful and responsible with the hand tools. Her students continue to learn how to be resourceful and self-reliant while they make useful things to use in the classroom and to give as gifts.
This year, my wife decided to give woodworking a try too. She had no previous woodworking experience at all, but she too found that her students were able to produce beautiful objects very similar to the models they were shown.
At a Professional Development Day for teachers, I recently facilitated a workshop on bringing woodworking into elementary classrooms. I was later contacted by one of the participants and was asked for some assistance on how to start a woodworking class in their elementary school.
And so, it has come full circle. It is now my turn to assist others, as Doug Stowe did for me, and to help others discover the benefits and the joys that woodworking can bring.
Make, fix, create and encourage others to do the same.
